WorkSafeBC has implemented a new investigation model in response to recommendations made in the WorkSafeBC Review and Action Plan (“Review and Action Plan”) was released in July of 2014.
The Review and Action Plan, prepared following problems with two sawmill explosion investigation, provided 43 recommendations to improve workplace health and safety in British Columbia. All 43 recommendations have been approved, and the implementation of the policies is currently underway.
Since July, many of the recommendations have been implemented, including:
The most significant change for employers is the creation of a dual investigation model which requires two distinct teams to have their work and files completely separated to minimize any opportunities for file and evidence contamination. If an investigation into a workplace accident suggests the potential for possible criminal prosecution, the “second” team will carry the investigation.
