The Ministry of Labour has recently released its upcoming Inspection Blitz Schedule, which is used to ensure workplace safety in a variety of sectors.
Injuries and fatalities that occur in the workplace can often be connected to a small number of underlying causes that are specific to, and vary by these sectors. The Inspection Blitzes are a part of the Ministry’s Safe at Work Ontario strategy and are designed to raise awareness as well as increase compliance with current health and safety legislation.
The Ministry of Labour announces these blitzes in advance, and tracks the results as part of a long-term plan to determine whether the blitzes are useful in both increasing compliance and decreasing workplace injuries.
The following is a summary of the Inspection Blitz Schedule for 2012-2013, by sector:
During these blitzes, the Ministry of Labour sends a number of inspectors to workplaces in Ontario. The inspectors arrive without warning, question the employer, and search for hazards that may be the source of workplace injuries. To avoid charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, employers must take reasonable precautions to control the targeted hazards.
