The Ontario Ministry of Labour (“MOL”) has announced a number of Occupational Health and Safety inspection blitzes on sector-specific hazards which are scheduled to begin in May, 2011. While the blitzes are announced in advance, individual workplaces will not be identified in advance of inspections.
The inspection blitzes will occur in virtually all sectors of the economy and include the Construction, Industrial, Health Care, Specialized Professional, and Mining Sectors. Each sector will have a different focus.
During an inspection, an inspector may issue orders against employers, supervisors, and workers relating to non compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations. The MOL has stated that it will take a “zero tolerance” approach to contraventions.
