It is with deep regret that Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark LLP announce the untimely passing of our dear partner and friend Bruce Binning. The partners, associates and staff express our profound sympathy to Bruce’s wife, Kay, and his children and grandchildren.
Bruce was a man of many talents. As the firm grew rapidly, he understood the need for improved governance and was instrumental in introducing structure, systems and technology that have allowed us to serve our clients in a proactive and positive way. For many years he was a member of the Executive Committee with special expertise in finances. His executive decisions were always fair and in the best interest of “The M.D.C. Family”.
While engaging in all aspects of Labour Law, Bruce developed a special expertise in Construction Labour Law in Ontario and beyond. His bargaining and mediation skills earned him the nickname of “Mr. Construction Industry”. The measure of a lawyer in any field is the regard in which he is held by his peers. Bruce was universally respected by the management and labour bar, as well as by his clients and the union representatives with whom he worked over the years.
Bruce decided in 2004 that he needed a new challenge. He joined the Ontario Labour Relations Board as a Vice-Chair with special responsibilities for the Construction Industry in Ontario (hearings and mediation). He did not, however, lose touch. He remained a wonderful friend to all of us. His interest in the firm and its growth was sincere and inspirational. He has left many benchmarks which we shall strive to follow. He will be missed by us.
